Pasqua in giro per Londra ๑ Easter holidays around London

Trascorrere le festività in modo alternativo mi è sempre piaciuto, così ho approfittato delle vacanze di Pasqua per visitare una capitale europea famosissima e amatissima: Londra! Non ci ero mai stata prima, ma tutti quelli che ci andavano, tornavano in Italia innamorati di questa città, perciò non potevo lasciarmela sfuggire. Il mio soggiorno è durato 6 giorni e i luoghi da visitare erano tantissimi, quindi il viaggio è stato un po’ stancante ma ne è valsa la pena! Prima di partire mi sono preparata un programma dettagliato su cosa vedere, quando andarci e come arrivarci (si sa che la metro di Londra è funzionale ma un po’ caotica se non sei abituato).

Il mio albergo era vicinissimo a Victoria station, 5/6 minuti a piedi. Da lì partivano varie linee di metro che permettevano di arrivare in qualsiasi punto della città. L’unica pecca è il costo del biglietto, molto più caro rispetto all’Italia: una buona alternativa è quella di acquistare la Travelcard, che permette viaggi illimitati su tutti i mezzi di trasporto londinesi (consultate il sito https://www.visitbritainshop.com/italia/london-travelcard/).

Il primo impatto che ho avuto con Londra è stato molto positivo: sono andata al famoso mercatino di Portobello, dove si possono trovare tantissime bancarelle di antiquariato (fumetti, abiti, gioielli, dischi in vinile …) e una cosa molto particolare sono le case del quartiere di Notting Hill, dipinte di mille colori, dal celeste al giallo. In questo quartiere si trova anche la casa in cui nacque George Orwell. Prendetevi il vostro tempo e fate un giro a Portobello senza fretta: troverete sicuramente qualcosa di speciale!

Nel pomeriggio mi sono recata al museo delle cere di Madame Tussauds approfittando del biglietto 2 in 1: si può scegliere dal sito un’altra attrazione da visitare a costo ridotto (http://www.madametussauds.com/London/BuyTickets/Default.aspx#tabs-combitickets). È stata un’esperienza divertente, le star e i personaggi storici presenti nel museo sono molti, da Beyoncé a Johnny Depp, da Hitler a Obama, oltre a Hitchcock e tanti altri. È previsto anche un viaggio attraverso la storia di Londra e, per i più temerari, una visita alla sala delle torture. Per concludere il tour, ho assistito ad un cortometraggio in 4D dei supereroi Marvel, davvero ben fatto!

Il giorno di Pasqua è stato dedicato ad attività più culturali, come il giro sul London Eye, la ruota panoramica più alta d’Europa, da cui si vede tutta la città; ed il British Museum.  Esso contiene reperti archeologici provenienti da tutto il mondo, infatti è grandissimo e un giorno intero non è sufficiente per visitarlo tutto. Il mio consiglio quindi è di acquistare una mappa all’entrata e stabilire il percorso da fare in base a cosa vi interessa di più. Così ho fatto io, dando priorità all’area dedicata all’Antico Egitto, all’Antica Grecia e Roma e al Medioriente. Impedibili sono la stele di Rosetta e parte delle rovine del Partenone.

Dopo la chiusura del Museo (purtroppo alle 5.30), mi sono diretta verso Soho, dove per un attimo ho creduto di essere in Cina. Studiando cinese, è stato bello riuscire a capire le insegne di negozi e ristoranti! Da lì ho proseguito per Carnaby Street, famosa negli anni ’60 per essere il punto di riferimento della “swinging London”.

 

Approfittando della giornata di sole, Pasquetta l’ho trascorsa a Greenwich, cittadina davvero deliziosa e famosissima per aver dato il nome al Meridiano 0. E’ possibile visitare l’osservatorio, scattare una foto al punto esatto da dove parte il meridiano 0, fare una passeggiata nel grandissimo giardino circostante ed anche visitare il museo navale nazionale, National Maritime Museum. Le attrazioni non mancano! Consiglio vivamente di recarvi a Greenwich non in metro ma con il battello: la guida vi racconterà la storia dei monumenti che incontrerete lungo il percorso, e vi rilasserete guardano la meravigliosa città in cui vi trovate. Bisogna solo sperare che faccia bel tempo.

Nel pomeriggio, ho visitato la Torre di Londra, anch’essa piena di attrazioni e mostre interessanti. Ad esempio, i Gioielli della Corona: corone, scettri e spade di tutti i sovrani inglesi, una collezione davvero stupenda che vi lascerà a bocca aperta! E non è finita qui: nel The Fusilier’s Museum potrete ammirare le armature dei cavalieri e dei re che hanno combattuto coraggiosamente per il loro regno. La Torre riserva anche tante altre attrazioni ma purtroppo chiude alle 5.30, quindi è molto difficile vedere tutte le sale.

Per concludere la giornata, non poteva mancare una passeggiata sul Tower Bridge, uno dei simboli di Londra. È davvero imponente e maestoso, si dice che vedere il ponte aprirsi per far passare un’imbarcazione porti fortuna.

L’ultimo giorno prima della partenza ho potuto ammirare la maestosa Westminster Abbey, luogo di culto principale dell’Inghilterra. Qui venivano e vengono incoronati i re e regine, qui ha avuto luogo il matrimonio di William e Kate, qui sono sepolti grandi artisti e scienziati di ogni tempo, insieme ai reali: Shakespeare, Newton, Geoffrey Chaucer, Darwin, Shelley, Byron, Maria Stuarda, Enrico VII d’Inghilterra e tanti altri. Molto interessante e significativa è una cappella dedicata alla memoria dei piloti della RAF (Royal Air Force).

Visto che il giorno seguente era il compleanno di Shakespeare, ho pensato di visitare il Globe Theatre. Ovviamente è una ricostruzione, poiché l’originale bruciò intorno al 1600. La struttura è interamente in legno, con 3 file gallerie. Il palco è impreziosito da due colonne che sembrano di marmo, ma in realtà sono di legno dipinto. E’ tuttora in uso da maggio a settembre, ed infatti ho assistito alle prove di uno spettacolo. Che emozione  sapere che in quel luogo sono state messe in scena le opere di Shakespeare!

Per concludere, una visita ad un negozio molto, molto dolce: lo store delle M&M’s! Quattro piani di caramelle, magliette, peluche, portachiavi e altri souvenir delle simpatiche caramelle colorate. In Inghilterra ci sono molti più personaggi di quelli che abbiamo in Italia, quindi approfittatene e fateci un salto. Alle pareti sono esposti tubi altissimi pieni di M&M’s, ogni tubo di un colore (dai più classici ai più strani, come il turchese o il lilla), e potrete creare la vostra miscela personalizzata!

Per chi vuole visitare Londra, consiglio caldamente il London Pass, che vi darà la possibilità di accedere a molte attrazioni senza fare la fila, inoltre dà diritto a sconti in vari negozi, e fa davvero risparmiare tempo e soldi (Londra è cara, si sa!). Questo viaggio è stata un’esperienza bellissima e sono davvero felice di aver visto con i miei occhi questa città. Ora, finalmente, capisco perché tutti quelli che la vedono se ne innamorano pazzamente!

 

PICCOLE COSE DA SAPERE

1) In Inghilterra la guida è a sinistra, quindi fate molta attenzione quando attraversate la strada.

2) Troverete tantissimi Italiani, quindi non stupitevi se sentirete parlare più italiano che inglese per le strade di Londra.

3) Nelle tradizionali cabine telefoniche rosse, è facile trovare numeri di ragazze che si prostituiscono, un po’ come accade in Giappone.

I always love spending holidays in a different way, so I took advantage of Easter holidays to visit a very famous and beloved European capital: London! I had never been there before, but people who visited it, came back to Italy in love with this city, so I couldn’t miss it. My stay lasted 6 days and the places to visit were many, so my trip was a bit exhausting but it was worth it! Before leaving I wrote down a detailed schedule encompassing things to visit, when and how to reach them (you know, in London the underground is efficient but a bit chaotic if you are not used to it).                My hotel was very close to Victoria station, only 5/6 minutes by foot. This station was served by many lines to reach any place in the city. The only defect was the cost of the ticket, more expensive in comparison with Italy: a good alternative is to buy a Travelcard, which will cover you for all your journeys whilst in London (visit https://www.visitbritainshop.com/italia/london-travelcard/).

My first impression of London was very positive: I went to the famous Portobello market, full of stands selling vintage objects (comic books, clothing, jewelry, vinyl discs …) and the houses of Notting Hill, the neighborhood of this market, are painted in many many colors, from light blue to yellow. This is also the neighborhod in which George Orwell was born. Take it easy and stroll along Portobello: you will surely find something special!

In the afternoon I went to Madame Tussauds wax museum, using a 2-in-1 ticket: you can choose from the website another attraction beside the wax museum to visit at a lower price (http://www.madametussauds.com/London/BuyTickets/Default.aspx#tabs-combitickets). It was a funny experience, in the museum there are many many celebrities and historical figures, from Beyoncé to Johnny Depp, from Hitler to Obama, besides Hitchcock and many others. The tour also includes a journey through the history of London and, for the brave ones, a visit to the torture chamber. At the end of the itinerary, I also watched a Marvel super heroes 4D short film, it was really good!

 

Easter day was dedicated to more instructive activities, as a ride on the London Eye, Europe’s tallest Ferris wheel, from which you can admire the whole city, and the British Museum. It conserves archeological evidences from all around the world, in effect it is huge and a single day is not enough to visit it from end to end. I suggest you to buy a map of the museum at the entrance and choose the exhibitions to see depending on what you are most intrested in. This is what i did, giving priority to the areas dedicate to Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and Rome and Middle East. You can not miss the Rosetta Stone and part of evidences of the Parthenon.

When the museum closed (unfortunataly at 5.30 pm), I wento to Soho, where for a moment I had the feeling of being in China. I study chinese, so I was very happy when I understood some signs of restaurants and shops! Then, I made for Carnaby Street, famous in the 60s for being the reference point of the “swinging London”.

Tanking advantage of the sunny day, I spent Easter Monday in Greenwich, a charming small town famous because the Prime Meridian was named after it. It is possible to visit the observatory, take a picture of the exact place where a brass strip marks zero longitude, go for a walk in the big surrounding park and visit the National Maritime Museum. There are many attractions! I warmly suggest you to go to Greenwich not by underground but by ferry: the tour guide will tell you about all the monuments you see on the way, and you will relax while admiring the beautiful city you are visiting. Just hope for good weather!

At evening I visited the Tower of London, full of intresting attractions and exhibitions. The Crown Jewels, for example: crown, scepters and swords of all the British Kings and Queens, a marvelous collection that will leave you speechless! And this is just the beginning: in The Fusilier’s Museum you can admire the armours of the kings and knights who fought bravely for the glory of their kingdom. The Tower has many other attractions but unfortunately, it closes at 5.30 pm so it is difficoult to see all the rooms.

Last but not least, a walk on the Tower Bridge, one of the symbols of London. It truly is imposing and majestic and people say that seeing the bridge opening to let ships through brings good luck.

The last day befor leaving, I went to the majestic Westminster Abbey, main place of worship of England. This is the place where kings and queens are coronated, where William and Kate got married and where scientists and poets of all time rest in peace, along with the royals: Shakespeare,  Newton, Geoffrey Chaucer, Darwin, Shelley, Byron, Mary Stuart, Henry VII of England and many others. In the abbey you can also admire the Royal Air Force Chapel, dedicated to the pilots who died in the Battle of Britain between July and October 1940.

The next day was Shakespeare’s birthday so I thought it was the perfect day to visit The Globe Thearte. This was just a reconstruction of the real theatre, because the authentic one burnt to the ground in the 17th century. The building is made of wood, with 3 levels of galleries. The stage is embellished with two wooden columns, but they seem to be made of marble. The theatre is still in use from may to semptember, indeed I saw the  rehearsals of a play. Visiting the place where Shakespeare put on his plays is very exciting!

 

Eventually, I shopped at a very very “sweet” store: the M&M’s Store!  Four floors full of pralines, T-shirts,  muppet furs, keychains and other souvenirs by M&M’s.In England there are many characters we do not have in Italy, so go and have a look! Walls are full of huge tubes containing each one a different color of  M&M’s (from the most traditional to the most unusual, like turquoise or lilac), and you can create your own mix!

 

For those who want to visit London, I warmly recommend the London Pass, that will entitle you to enter a number of tourist attractions in London having paid a set fee in advance. It will also entitle you to have a discount in the shops listed in the guide that you will receive when  buying the London Pass (you know, London is very expensive!). This journey was a great experience for me and I am very happy I had the opportunity to see this city for myself. Now I understand why people who visit London, always fall in love with it!

LITTLE THINGS YOU MAY NEED TO KNOW

1)      In England people drive on the left, so be very careful when crossing the road.

2)      In London there are many many Italians, do not be surprised if you hear more people speaking Italian than people speaking English.

3)      In the traditional red telephone booths you will probably find the phone number of girls who prostitute themselves, as it happens in Japan.
